One of the five pillars on which Allevamento Poggio di Ponte is based are Swans. The latter are classified among all the majestic Anatidae, full of grace and refined throughout our structure. Thanks to their white snow-white plumage and their regal bearing, these wonderful animals are revered as divine, sacred creatures that possess magical powers. The Swan is the symbol of purity, truth, innocence and hope plays an important role in mythology and religious beliefs. Partculalarly relevant is the Greek myth “Leda and the Swan” as well as the very famous Russian ballet of 1877 “Swan Lake” with the classical music of the composer ” Pëtr Il'ič Čajkovskij. These Species are present in all 5 continents with the exception of Antartic and Africa; the northern swans are all white, while none of the 3 southern families are entirely white, except for the Coscoroba which however has a bright red beak. Swans generally populate wet and water-rich areas, periodically live in the open ocean and feed mainly on aquatic plants; they are very long-lived and acquire sexual maturity after ¾ years of life. They form monogamous couples that often remain so throughout their lives, except in extraordinary cases such as the death of the 2 partners. Swans babies are usually born with a grayish down which, with age, takes on a pure white color.
